Another of Marx's arguments can be summarized as: humans are inherently good, but competition for scare resources forced upon them by inequality in the economy makes them bad.

Do you agree with this description of human nature, attributing evil to economy?

I completely agree with these description.
If human see drowning child, drowning, human automatically empathize with the child and they try to rescue. I think the pure humans have good heart.
However, when human are in the competition of society. they have "self-interest" in the name of reason.
But Never selfish human are not rational.
For example, a situation that had made concessions is better rather than seek to each other better. Selfishness rather drop the efficiency and benefit of the whole
like "prisoner's dilemma."
