Summary)
Deviance is behavior that violates cultural
norms. It divided into two types. First is formal deviance that is illegal
activities. Examples of this are robbery, theft, rape. Second is informal
deviance that is violate social norms, not be codified into law.
There are theories of Deviance:
Psychological Explanation, Social-Strain Typology, Structural-Functionalism and
so on.
According to theory that is about
psychology, deviance associate with brain structure.
Social-strain typology is proposed by
Robert K. Merton. He said deviance was divided to five types: conformity, innovation,
ritualism, retreatism, rebellion.
Structural-functionalism theory says deviant
plays important role in society. Because, first, deviance helps draw a line
between things to do and thing to don’t do.
Although crime statistics don’t provide a
perfect view of crime, it is still important. Crime statistic include
incarceration rates, populations, race, homicide.
In social control, It is divided to formal
and informal social control and some researchers have outlined motivations
underlying the formal social control: retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation,
societal protection.

Before, I don’t know deviance has two type:
formal and informal. And reading this writing, I think that deviance can be
different catching up with country, culture. And I think if culture is change,
norms of deviance can be change. So, activities that are not respected are also
later will be respected.
Wondering things is that eat humans meat is
of course wrong activity but in extremely starving situation, it is still
deviance.
