2016.10.15. / Hyewon Lee (이혜원)

1_What I learned with seventh week Wikipedia link.

Deviance is every actions which are against to cultural norms. There are two types of deviances: formal deviance and informal deviance. Formal deviance is violation of law, and informal deviance is violation of silent social norms. Deviance is depending on cultural norm, so deviance might different relatively according to culture. And also there are many theories dealing with deviations.

2_Mention & Question about this week study.

both pictures are sign of victory, but in U.K., right picture have bad meaning.
Before I have lecture about deviance and read this week link, I just thought that deviance is some behaviors which make other person to frown their eyes. Also I can learn that deviance is also relative. I think in Sociology, cultural diversity is very important.
I found more examples of deviance. In Korea, when people take a picture, maybe everyone make victory sign in their hands. But in U.K., making victory sign with showing your back of the hand, it is very bad swearwords.
I was interesting about cultural relativity in deviance. Also I have question about this. There are very famous saying, "When you are in Rome, do as Romans do." In a light of deviance, do you agree with this sentence? Should Romans tolerate cultural difference or outsider who visit Rome should do as Romans do? If you should choice one thing, what would you choice?

Thanks for reading my posting! : )

  1. I think I agree with "When you are in Rome, do as Romans do." Because each country has diffferent custom and culture and this things should be respected. So, If people go to the other countries, they should follow the country's rule
