Socialization is a process of adopting people to society. Arnett explains theoretical understanding of socialization : control of impulse and conscience development, role preparation such as job, gender, or parents, and production of meaning such as what is important and what can be the purpose of lifes. Socialization has primary or secondary process. Primary socialization occurs on basic period such as childhood or adolescent. Secondary socialization is for adopting more complex society, so it can be occur lifetime. The difference point is content, context, and response. Also, Arnett devide socialization to two parts : broad and narrow. Broad socialization is about independent or expressing oneself. Narrow socialization is about obedience or conformity. Erving Goffman explains natures of total institutions. According to him, purpose of socialization is resocialization of individuals, and he called this process “The mortification of the self.” When we hear the story of children of feral or wild, we can easily know the importance of socialization. The importance of socialization is possibility of changing definition of socialization over generation to generation.
Long and Hadden redefine socialization as "the medium for transforming newcomers into bona fide members of a group." After this redefining, socialization became processes and at the same time outcomes for joining groups.
There were examples of research socialization about social classes. And socialization can lead to preparation of death and can be differ points of education. Anyway, the resocialization depend on situation and environment changes.
Interesting points & Discussions :
It was interesting that people correct their acting to social preferences. Maybe this is the reason why people became 'normal' persons time goes by. And at the total institution part, the explain which Mortimer and Simmons did impress me. Normal socialization occur by normative methods, and socialization for deviants occur by compulsory methods. Well, this may be thought that vague notions, but in case of prisons or military institution, it could be explained.
"Socialization can be changed by situation or environment." I agree with this comment. Time when my parents attended school is differ from time whey I attended school. I heard people say that "today students are different from our era." That was right because some system of school such as punishment or education course directions are changed. Also, regulation and control of students are changed. I think it can be example of changing of socialization according to situation and environment changing.
Wow! It never crossed my mind about the way socialization evolves across generations. After reading the article, I only thought of the theories of socialization as general theories applying to all of socialization. It would be interesting to see the ways in which socialization develops as a country develops, in terms of economical scale, changing from maybe a producer into a creator (using raw materials as opposed to processed goods to create products), or maybe even as the country becomes more globalized.
