Class Discussion: Post-Antibiotic Era

In the past, before globalisation, there was a higher diversity of people and thus a more varied immune system. What may affect one group of people may not be as devastating to another. Resistance to disease is different from population to population.

With the introduction of globalisation, the world is becoming more similar, our bodies are becoming more similar. As can be seen from the SARS or bird flu incidents, people all around the world can be affected by the same disease. If bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics and there is no way to destroy them, the whole world will be affected. The situation will be worse than before globalisation when societies were more separated and diverse.
