Summary
Stratification means to divide people through social, economic, racial, gender classification in society. there are two dominant perspective about Stratification. one of perspectives is Structure-Functionalism. It argues that Stratification contributes to give overall stability in society, So Stratification is inevitable. another is Conflict Theory. It argues that Stratification is not inevitable, and stratification is harmful in society because it benefits only the rich and powerful.
Most of people know that inequality is bad. However inequality is not disappear easily, because the rich and powerful get benefit from inequality. They will use their power for not losing their benefit.
Because of this inequality and Stratification, the poor get threat of life and live with low-quality of life.

Opinion
I’m interested in the part of ‘The persistence of Inequality’. I already knew that the wealthy will try to maintain existing system for their benefit, But I didn’t think deeply most of people have belief that is acceptant this system of inequality. When I learned that, I could realize I had usually this belief. I often heard the words such ‘if you more tried, you might get more good result’ or ‘Because you didn’t do best, you get this poor result’. And also I could realize the social structure that contained in this words by reading this chapter.

Question
I agree the sentence that Stratification is related to economic system like Capitalism. Inequality and Stratification are getting heavy. So that, I wonder that Inequality can’t be eliminated in Capitalism. Will Stratification disappear only in system of Socialism or Communism? Or, In spite of maintaining system of Capitalism, Can we eliminate Stratification?

  1. I agree with your opinion. As you metioned, the thinks such as 'If you more tried, you might get more good result' justify inequality. These thinks make people adjust to society like caste system which most of indian believed. But, now we learned that these thinks are not fair. Maybe these are just myth to justify systems.

And, I hope to lessen inequality. The thinks that justifying inequality and caste system are just things that people maked. Then, we could change them by education and doing something to make people think differently. As we keep efforts, it will change. But if we do not any efforts, inequality never disappear.
