Introduction to Sociology/Socialization
Summary
Socialization is preparing process that people can function properly in social life. People in different culture are socialized differently. We cannot judge this differences. There are controversials about some aspects of human behaviours are socialized or natural. Socialization can divided into two parts: primary socialization and secondary socialization. Primary Socialization occurs in childhood and adolescence. It is basic and core socialization. Secondary Socialization is lifelong socialization to people. It involves socialization in new groups and enviornments. Also, There are concepts called broad and narrow socialization. Broad Socialization is related to broad range of results and Narrow Socialization is related to narrow range of results. For example, individual who has wide-range of potential become changed into limited-potential individual through his/her life. This chapter tells about 'Total Institutitons' such as prison, mental-hospital. It is for re-socialization. Re-socializing process involves pressure and compulsion.
Each Theory see 'Socialization' in slightly different view.
First, Symbolic Interactionism see human develops through social interactions.
In Role theory, Socialization is learning properly norms,attitudes,identity and roles to function new roles in society. In Reinforcement Theory, Socialization is outcome of cognitive evaluation about advantages and disadvantages. Lastly, Internalization Theory see human develop or learn by participating groups.
My opinion&Interesting Points
I've never heard of the concepts of 'broad and narrow socialization'. So, it was interesting but little difficult. Generally, It was good to know about socialization.Questions & Discussions

ReplyDeleteI agree with symbolic interactionism. I think argument of this theory that human is socialized by relationship with others and it is continuous process is impressive. human have different characteristics depending on experience in society, and characteristics also can change by other experience. I think ‘symbolic interactionism’ explain well this point.
ReplyDeleteI am most interested in "Role theory". First, this theory is most familiar. Second, when I read this theory, I come up "role theory" and "impression theory" learned the past week2. We always unconsciously or consciously play like actor in platform. as student, as friend, as daughter
