(A) Collective behavior
Collective behavior appears in more spontaneous way than behavior by the social structure. It is neither conforming nor deviant behavior about society. Collective behavior just happens when they have their pursuit. Also, collective behavior happens when norms is absent or unclear. Collective behavior is different from group behavior in aspect that collective behavior has limited and short-lived social interaction, no clear social boundaries, generating weak and unconventional norms. We can prevent from happening tragedy by studying collective behavior. In addition, understanding how to organize such a movement can provide movement members the tools they need to succeed. There are four types of crowd that lead to these collective behavior. It is loose collection, deliberately planned, emotionally charged event, intent on accomplishing something. crowd that have specific and violent end become "mob". And, crowd that are not specific but only violent end become "riot". There are many theory about crowd. First is "Contagion theory". The public is spread contagiously and hypnotically. This is based on anonymity. The aspect is irrational and emotional. Second is "Convergence theory". This theory is that crowd is to gather like-minded individuals. In addition, this link explain emergent-norm theory and crowds as "gatherings. This link explains "Panic" next to crowd. Panic is emotion dominating the public in situation like disaster. Also, this link explains about concept "riot". Riots are typically chaotic and exhibit herd-like behavior. Mass-hysteria is situation of uncontroled fear and emotional excesses. And, they lost self-control. In addition, this link says "fad" and "rumor". Rumor demands use of emotion to community by passing through mouth. These rumors is difficult to verify, have uncertainty, and is based by anonymity.

(B) Social Movements
Social movements is alliance that have common interest about social change. Modern social movements became possible through low illiteracy rate and increased mobility. Modern social movements is seen as democratic movements, labor movements, ecological movements, peace movements. Social movements is divided to four types according to “who is the movement attempting to change"and ”how much change is being advocated". The four types are alternative social movements(individuals/limited), redemptive social movements(individuals/radical), reformative social movements(everyone/limited), revolutionary social movements(everyone/radical). There are theories about these social movements. They separately explain "how social movements develop". The theories are "Deprivation theory", "Mass-society theory", "Structural-strain theory", "Resource-mobilization theory", "Political process theory" and "Culture theory".

#MENTION

I was interested in part of "Panic". Especially, panic is the aspect of current public in Korea. At this point, the public's emotions are full of the feeling with rage about the South Korean government. Through moral panic, life balance of the public is destroyed. The concentration about the role in charge of them is lower and psychological time disappear. The public express their rage about society by gathering at Gwanghwamun every Saturday. It shows sometimes violent aspect, but now they express peaceful aspect. When can we get away from panic about these situation?

#QUESTION

I thinked about "how social movements develop". My position is close to "Deprivation theory". Social movements result from the lack of something. The lack can be not only material things but also mental things. For example, when women's human rights, women lead to social movements about women's rights. Deprivation theory have criticism that the theory has a hard time explaining why the groups that form social movements do when other people are also deprived. But, my thinking is different. Although other people are deprived, we feel empathy about them and accept as my work. So other people's deprivation is not only other people's story but my story. How do you think about "how social movements develop"?

  1. In the past, violent demonstrations often led to people being hurt and to death. At present, however, I think that non-violent social movements will make a social movement without hurting anyone.

  2. With regards to your thoughts on deprivation theory and the limitation of that theory, I have an opinion I qould like to suggest. The reason why some deprived people might start socil movements while some don't may lie in the power that they feel at a point in time. I think that the moment a group of deprived people gain enough strength to feel like they can do something about their deprivation, they will start a social movement. Deprived people who dont feel that collective power will not start any social movements because they dont think they will be able to change anything.

  3. I think the reason of why social movements develop is very simple. Because society has been more and more grown bigger and more and more complicated. In past, society was small and a form of political organization simple (maybe monarchy politics). In this form, it is very difficult to do peaceful social movement because subjugated class had less power than hierarchy. So people in past did violent social movement such as revolt. But as becoming modern time, subjugated class has had more power, social movement has been peaceful.
