a) Introduction to Sociology

Summary :

The sociology is the subject for investigating human social life. In old days, recognition of scientific investigation was vague. But, as the time goes by, empirical and positivist investigating method emerged increasingly. Today, scientific investigating methods like empirical thing are important. From early sociological studies, there are two approach methods : Positivism and Verstehen. Quantitative and Qualitative sociology have been emerged from these two approach so that finally this gap makes the difference of data collection.

Interesting point & Discussion :

By this time, I didn’t know how much changes were in discipline of sociology. It was good chance to know the specific history of sociology.

I am interested about some sentences.
First, a sentence which Peter Berger said. “[the] sociologist tries to see what is there. He may have hopes or fears concerning what he may find. But he will try to see, regardless of his hopes or fears. It is thus an act of pure perception...”
I think it is so difficult condition because it’s hard to perfectly being independent from sociologist’s past experience.
Second, overall this reading material, I feels that power of the words like ‘scientific/empirical’ are strong. It’s a little bit weird. Maybe human being will act along with situation, and also that cases will be so much. Is it possible to study within this complexity?

b) Being a Sociologist

Summary :

This reading material taught me the meaning that have degree in sociology or being a sociologist and some benefits. There are two possible choices : Studying (get a degree) or Earning a job (corporate work or NGO) by working outside of the college (or working inside of the college_being professor). Whatever your choice is, some skills that you got by studying help you adapt to any society.

Interesting point & Discussion :

It is so hopeful story, if I will study hard. Well, a sentence ‘Sociology is one of the top-ten highest-paying rare jobs in the United States and is generally rated as one of the most satisfying occupations.’ makes me sad... Because this is not the case in South Korea. Actually, almost jobs are same situation because of unemployment problems of young people.
Anyway, I can’t understand this sentence’s meaning : ‘Two factors seems to limit the occupational prospects of sociologists: The first limiting factor is their own imagination.’ (?) ‘The second limiting factors is that many people do not know what sociologists are trained to do.’ (?) Please give me some advices.

  1. I think meaning of the sentence you wonder is that ‘people don’t know sociology has many field of study because of their pre-conceived notions and also people don’t know accurately what sociology majors learn and be trained, so they darken sociology’s prospect of future.‘ umm.. it’s just my speculation

  3. As you said, human is so difficult to have pure perception. However, It's the aspect of "try". sociologist recognize oneself is on a status of sociologist. So, they try to exclude their experience to study about human, society.

  4. My take on the issue sociologists have with finding employment is that the skills a sociologist acquires during their studies can be applied to so many different situations. Its a case of being able to do anything, ending up doing nothing at all.

In contrast to a career in physics for example, you know you can either be in a job that applies physics (e.g. engineering or research) or that teaches physics.

Sociology is so broad, and with so many upcoming hybrids like economic sociology or historical sociology, the choice is even more widespread.

I feel that pursuing a career in sociology requires one to know what one wants to do in a job, and work towards having that type of job. The world will not give you what you want; you need to tell them what you want to do.

Hopefully this can help you clear things up a bit :)
