This week posting deal with sociological culture and religion. And I summarize it. Culture include objects and symbols, the meaning given to those objects and symbols, and the norms, values, and beliefs that pervade social life. But culture is not rigid, culture need abstraction. culture exist an artificial categorization of elements of social life. Shared culture group by people is subculture. and counterculture is subculture Contrary to a major culture. View of the culture is several. First view is ethnocentrism. This view is to see the world by perspective of one's own culture. Second view is cultural relativism. Cultural relativism is that one desire different cultures than one’s culture. Third view is theory of culture. Theory of culture is Ritzer’s integrative culture. Religion have several definitions. First, definition of religion by Emile Durkheim is that Classification sacred and profane. Second, Religion as Existential Questioning is that attempt to answer existential questions. Third, religion as Supernature is that the collective beliefs and rituals of a group relating to supernature. And, religion have several theories. First theory is the Structural-Functional approach to religion. This theory have three major functions. Social cohesion, social control and providing meaning and purpose. Second theory is the social-conflict approach. This theory pursues change. Third theory is social constructionist. This theory is the naturalistic explanation of the origins of religion. And, fourth theory is Religious Pluralism. This theory is one religion can overcome differences between different religions and conflicts within the same religion.

First, I recognize the another culture in cultural relativism. Because, each country, each tribe and each people have their own life style for generations. If the culture is allowed morally, the culture must be respected.
ReplyDeleteBut, if the culture is immoral, for example killing someone by reason of their culture, we don't have to respect the cultrue. However, I think the standard of moral is relative, too. So, I don't interfere the another culture even if the culture isn't allowed.
I read your article well. I think so too.
DeleteThank you for good opinion!!!!
I don't understand 'what perspective do you see?' mean.
ReplyDeleteI think that we use ethnocentrism and cultural relativism neutrally.
