#a: Politics

Summary and my thought

Politics is activity about how rule the people, and how to maintain social order.
So people have elect a parliamentarian that is representative of their opinions.
Elected parliamentarians makes narrow their different opinion through dialogue and compromise.
There are many different types of government. (Monarch, Democracy, Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist state)
In this form of government, South Korea is interesting. South and North Korea is in the same land, but they have different political ideologies.
South korea is democracy, but North korea is communist state. Because of this difference in ideologies, became a divided nation.
South Korea has adopted the unicameral to the present. So in parliament, the ruling party and the opposition party have conflict.
Most of that conflict were not compromised. Because they fought for their benefits, not for nations people. So, koreans don't believe parliamentarian.

Question

How can parliamentarians recover trust of nations people? think together!

what is politics?

Summary

This article, has said in politics. Politics is a process of determining the group of people.

In politics, legitimate authority is distinguished into three types. 1) Rational-legal domination: This is an authority that rights basis of legitimacy (that domination is satisfied) base on the rules and laws. 2) Traditional authority: This is the authority derived from tradition of habits, customs, the social structure. 3) Charismatic authority: It's domination by the charismatic authority.

For the sake of social stability, the government has the authority that is able to exercise a compelling force.

This article introduces the kind of government. 1) Monarchy 2) Democracy 3) Totalitarian 4) Oligarchy 5) Communism

In addition, in this article, I was interested in politics and gender, age, race.

Mention

In this article, I was interested in politics and gender, race, class. In recent years, Problem of politics and sex, race decrease a lot. Currently, the South Korean president, is "박근혜". She is a woman. South Korea's president is an example showing that the political and gender issues has been reduced a lot. The President of the United States is a "Barack Obama". The president of the United States is black. He is an example showing that the political and racial issues have been reduced a lot. However, I believe that the political and class problem is still serious. In my week 4 posting, I was saying that I prefer conflict theory. Society is still unfair. Higher layer is easily possible to advance to politic through the education and personal connections with the rich assets. However, Ordinary people are opposite. In order to advance in politics, They must strive desperately. However, Most have also failed despite they try a lot. Our social structure will maximize these problems, and political and class issues will become bigger and bigger.

Question

I think seriously problem about politics and class. When you look at the social structure, There are two point of view. (conflict theory, function theory) What is your position? If you prefer a function theory, what is your opinion?

https://www.theodysseyonline.com/be-invested-in-politics
This posting deals with politics. Now I summarize it. Politics’s meaning is process that group of people make decision. Government have power, authority and violence. Government maintain by this three things. And there is many type of government. First type is monarchy. Monarchy is that one of person has supreme power and this power maintain until monarch’s abdication. Second type is democracy. Democracy is that the majority of citizens within a country or a state have right and authority. This type has freedom of political expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Third type is totalitarianism. This type is that Regulation exist in public and private life. Fourth type is oligarchy. This type is that small elite group have power effectively. fifth type is communist state. This type is that Communist states are granted special and dominant role. sixth type is theocracy. This type is that god or deity is the state's supreme civil ruler. And political parties is political organization to achieve and maintain political power within government. In recent research, regressive ideology is advocated than conservative ideology. And these days, media is developed. We contact many information through SNS, newspaper, internet etc. So, These developments make government regressive.

1.Summary

Politics is the process that people discuss and make decisions in the groups.
There are three important terms in politics.: Power, Authority and Violence. Power is ability that can change people's behavior. Authority looks similar to Power, but these words meaning differ.   The basic notion of politics is the process making decisions through interaction of people. In a region such as cooperation, academy, or religion, politics is a tool to take the political matters.
In politics, there are important concepts : power, authority, and violence. The power is ability to influence other people’s behavior. The authority is a power which has legitimacy.
Max Webber (picture1)
1864. 4. 21, German - 1920. 6. 14
Especially, Max webber propose three type of legitimate authority. That is Rational-legal authority, Traditional authority, and Charismatic authority. Rational-legal authority has formal rules such as constitution. and it is the type of most modern society. Traditional authority is a custom from long standing habits such as the hereditary succession of power. Charismatic authority is important for leader’s charisma such as religion leaders.
Violence is government’s power to force people to behave. So violence cause controversy with many questions about ‘justification’ of violence.

As we know, there are many types of government. According to the number of leaders or root of power, the types devide to Monarchy, Democracy, Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist state, and Theocracy.
Political parties are alliance to take various interests. They try to retain political power. Basically, there are two type of parties : a two-party system(such as US), and a multi party system(such as Sweden). There is a law that an election system affects an system of political party. That is Duverger’s law.
Last, there are examples of voting patterns and inequality such as gender, race, and class.

I thought what people earn through 'politics'. People come in politics because the politics includes member's benefits. According to this concept, when we elect people who decide nation's policy, political agenda which that candidates suggested determine who will win or lose. 'Social interest' is most important variable on political agenda. (reference : 일반논문 : 복지에 대한 사회적 관심과 복지예산과의 관계_박기묵

Discussion1.
“Why are young people less likely to vote than are elderly people? What are the consequences of this?”
Voter Turnout by Age : 2012 US Presidential Election (picture2)
picture 2_copyright from : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AVoter_Turnout_by_Age_2012_US_Presidential_Election.png

I thought about this. To get the social interest, first, condition, which is worthy of getting interest, should be exist already. I don’t know if Korean younger people could have how many interests about politics. Since they were elementary school student, they went private educational academy to go to a college concentrating education only for entering college. Also, the processes for getting a job wait them. After getting a job with extensive efforts, they strive to adapt to that society. Look around. How many younger people who get the interest on congress and talk about that political topics could you see?

One of the reason why the older people’s voter turnout is high is years of experience, absolutely. the older people can know what they need because they have more experiences and composures than the younger people have. They also can know how they should act through the formal experiences in a society. And, the voter turnout follows this interest.
Order of priority on pledge which politician have to do, is up to things that nation, especially substantive voters, concern about with ‘interest.’ Therefore, the present policies more focus on the older people’s benefits than the younger’s. Because the older people relatively have more experiences and know their situation and position than them.

Someone would talk to me, but I don’t want to hear such as “Don’t grumble.”, “The older people strive to live, themselves.”, “At first, you had no social interest. Such you were a fool.”, “There are outstanding younger people having social interest, you were a lazy.”, or “Don’t attribute your disinterest to our responsibility.” If they did, I want to ask them “But you made this social structure which compel us to compete. so, is it not your fault at all?”

Discussion2.
“How could you get more young people to vote?”

Well, I have a question. Which child grows well under the two kind of parents?
a) “Don’t you know? What did you do to deserve this?” abusing and forcing
b) Arouse children’s interest and teach various methods

I don’t know. How could I know which child grows well? Just the child under the second parent will be more confident, independent, and responsible.

If you concern about Korean younger people’s indifference on politics and law voter turnout, make them have an interest on politics. Not just a brief interest, but a steady interest on the methods such as why we should have an interest, why we learn the politics, and how we could express our opinion formally and how we could refer that opinion to formal place should be taught from our childhood. Only then we can choose weather we will have interest on politics.
We want to disregard something unknown. If we knew basic process and had a concern about politics, only then we want to have interest on politics.

Politics is the ruling the country.
In addition, politics is the process of decision-making of people.
Politics have been observed in human interactions, including corporate, academic, religious.
Politics consists of methods used to apply the social authority and power, and social policy.

Political power has to do with what the distribution of public resources.

Max Weber distinguished three types of legitimate authority.
The first type is Rational-legal authority. This has to do with formal rules and legitimacy.

The second type is the Traditional authority. It derived from the social structure.

The last type of authority is Charismatic authority.

The charisma of the individual or the leader plays an important role.

Most modern government have the power in society.

Namely, the government has the right, based on its authority, to force people to behave in particular ways.

Political parties seeks to acquire and maintain political power within the government.

Therefore, political parties are usually involved in the election campaign.

In political system, voting is allowed some people are more likely to vote than others.

It may be that there is related to race, gender and age.

Additionally, some people are more likely to have access to political power than are other people.

I didn't know much about politics. Because I felt politics difficult part.
But I read this article I know about politics.
I was interesting about inequality of political power.
It is more easy to understand graph.

Politics: Managing the Society (Week 5) - Conan Chua

1. Summary

Politics is in essence the way a group of people make decisions, be it in a large scale corporation or a small scale classroom. The term is more commonly used as a reference to the government, in terms of political power, decisions, authority and so on.

Political power allows a group of leaders in society to allocate public resources with the aim of improving their jurisdiction’s quality of life or economy. This power is based on the level of influence that the group has over others, which can be gained through means such as money. Talking about political power, one cannot forget the authority that the government has. As a government, their authority is their right to exercise change within the community.

There are 3 types of authority:

a.      Rational-legal Authority – Barack Obama, Constitution of the U.S.A
Authority that derives its legitimacy based on formal rules and established laws.

b.      Traditional Authority – King Abdullah bin Abdul al-Saud, hereditary monarch
Authority derived from long-established social elements, such as customs and habits. Power is passed down from generation to generation.

c.      Charismatic Authority – Joseph Smith Jr., founder of Mormonism
Authority derived from leader’s charisma, personality, or support of higher power (e.g. God)

Government authority often leads to an exertion of force if anyone doesn’t not do what the government deems the right thing to do. This poses a paradox, as violence from the government seems to be more “correct” than violence from non-government personnel that have not been authorized to commit that violence. This begs the question, can a government operate successfully if it did not have the power to use force?

Certain sensitive issues arise in the running of a political system that mostly center on inequality. In the case of gender, women are underrepresented in political positions. This in turn affects voter choice, as men tend to vote for the more conservative party if they feel threatened by gender and racial minorities. Race, Age and Societal Class also contribute to their share of political inequality.

2. Something of interest to me

With regards to the recent US Presidential Race, there is one glaringly obvious problem with the system; Donald Trump. A candidate that apparently has so much charisma that he is able to garner the support of a huge portion of the population, despite all the judgmental and unsubstantiated comments he makes. What happens when a charismatic Trump gets elected and in turn protected by the Constitution, and he is unable to do anything he promised? (Please excuse my comments if they are wrong; I have much to learn about US politics)

3. Discussion point

Referring back to the above, I have my doubts in a system where a country’s citizens have to choose between 2 very different leaders, and what happens to the other half of the country that did not choose the elected leader. How can a country function as 2 halves with different approaches to the same problems? I’m not sure how an election can be deemed successful if the winning candidate only wins by a small margin. Even with repeated votes until a higher percentage of support is won, who’s to say that those votes were made by people of sound mind, or who just wanted the election to end and for things to move along?

week 5 (Heo so hee)

Summary

This week I studied politics. Politics is the process which people make decisions together. I was able to learn about power, violence, and authority. Power is to influence the lives of others and the distribution of labor, wealth, and resources. Authorities have different powers such as the legality and legitimacyMax Weber classified three types of authorities which are Rational-legal authority, Traditional authority, and Charismatic authority.

Also I was able to learn about 6 types of government. Monarchy is a form of concentration of all the power and strength to one of the highest places.  democracy is given sovereignty to the people and have adopted forms of government in many country. Totalitarianism is regulated and controlled a lot of things such as economy and criticism. The oligarchy's power were concentrated to a small number of elite and the forces are inherited. And there are Communist State, Theocracy.

American parties are divided with democratic party and republican party. Sweden has a number of political parties and can make multi-party system.

And I was able to learn the inequality of age, race, class, gender in politics.

It was a beneficial time to learn different types and forms of politics. In particular, I was interesting to learn about the part of political inequality.

Summary
Politics is decision making process that happens in most of social activity.
In types of government, there are Monarchy that monarch have supreme power of state and Democracy that citizen has sovereignty of state, Totalitarianism which regulate most aspect of public and private life, Oligarchy which is governed by small elite, Communist state which conform the ideology of communism. Theocracy that creed is important ideology of state. Aspect of vote, the way to participate politics, differ depending on gender, age, race, class, ideology.

Opinion
In the part of ‘politics and gender’, I’m interested the fact that white males tend to vote for conservative candidates in order to hold their privilege. I think this matter can apply in korea. This situation is occurring in korea and conflict goes from bad to worse. We should realize that our behavior for hold privilege make difficult to conduct state’s function of “mediation of interest and row between groups or individuals”.

Question

This reading say that government can exert violence when individuals do not conduct specific action which government direct. Then, If specific action directed by government was improper instruction that violate individual’s right and individuals refuse to follow improper instruction, So government exert violence, how can people resist?

Summary
Political science is the field of the social sciences.
And political science research politics and political phenomenon.
Politics occur in the human society.
Thomas Hobbes said "the war of all against all". It means people last fight while living in society. And there are many variety of government.
For example   Monarchy,Democracy,Totalitarianism, Oligarchy,Communism and so on.
South korea belong to Democracy.

My thought
In the political society, vote is neccesary.
But a turnout of Korea is poor.
A poor turnout means political indifference.
The way to resolve these political indifference have to be presented continuously.
Politics is essential element in the society but I was not interested in politics of politician.
I thought my opinion woudn't be reflected in politics.
But as I am doing this task, I  have become interested in politics.
And I have known about politics.

Question
There are phenomenon of political apathy in other many country as well Korea.
Is it attribute to the public? or politicians?

Introduction to Sociology/Politics

Summary

Politics means way of making decisions with grouped people and founded in among people, corportations, and religious organizations. It is concept which involves 'power, authority and violence'. Let's look about them specifically. Political power is ability to influence others' life to implement distribution of wealth and labour power. Authority is legitimate right to wield that kind of power. Max Weber classified authority into three which are rational-legal authority, traditional authority and charismatic authority. Violence is power that government can wield if citizens do not comply with government.
There are six different types of governments. First, 'Monarchy' is an individual, monarch has all state's authorities. 'Democracy' is based on principle which is equality and freedom(for press and for communication..etc). 'Totalitarianism' is political system that government regulate every public or private aspects of life. Press is controlled and Citizens are under surveillance.  Oligarchy is small-elite group has political power. Communist State is domination of Communist, most dictators of Communist state argue they are democratic. Finally, In Theocracy, God is head of state. It is ruled by divine law.
There are two main political parties in USA, 'Democratic party and Republican party'. Sweden is multi-party system. Political power does not concentrate on only one party. Parties make collaboration together.
In this chapter also tells about types of voting and inequality. We can know that women, young people, low-level people and minorities have less power in politics. Lastly, people have some particular ideaology in politics, Conservative and Progressive. These ideologies are mostly affected by biased media.

My opinion & Interesting part

In this chapter, party-system was interesting. But, It is little difficult for me to understand just by reading the texts in Wikipedia. So, I searched about party-system in Youtube video.

Politics is a process of determining by the people in the group. This word seems to be generally applicable only in government but that is activity that affect all of society. Authority is often called the "power" in government. But the meaning of the word is different. Authority means right that can claim leditimacy and legality. Max Weber said the authority of the three types. 1. rational legal authority - the format and rules 2. The rights of derived tradition - traditional customs, social structure 3. Charismatic authority - the charismatic individual and leader Also governmebt has ability that forcibly overpower citizens. But these ability should be used only bad situation 1.Monarchy- There are people that has super powers. It was often used system in middle ages and ancient times 2.Democracy-Form of government to be held by the majority of people. All people has freedom and are equality 3.Totalitarianism- system to control all aspects of civilian life 4.Oligarchy-system to control all aspects of civilian life 5.Communist State-faithful devotee is recognized civil rulers. when people vote, women tend to less involved. Also there is a tendency that young people vote less than older people. We tend to vote more whites than other races in the United States. rich was likely to many vote. interesting point I am interesting point that is authority of three types. because i think authority only one type. but authority very diverse! wondering point All age, race and gender wonder something how relatively similar voting.

extra point

what are between teacher and children have inequality power in your class room? if your teacher is authority your students depressed and complain grades So your student defiance. because students have dissatisfaction. As a result, Between students and teacher will degenerate and your class will be made cool attitude. what are we signaling through the choice of our individual clothing in the classroom? your children wear black clothing. Maybe your children is depressed. in contrast, your children wear bright clothing. Maybe your children is happy Also clothing see gap between the rich and poor in classroom.

Extra Point Blogging

Q: What are between teacher and chlidren have inequality power in class room?

A: I think test is a good example of this question. In test, student becomes just a weak person. Student can do is just waiting and waiting score grading by teacher. And acoording teacher's condition in that day, way of class is must changed. If teacher feel angry,  class becomes stiffening. If teacher feel good, class becomes activing. So, generally, teacher has more power than student in class.

Summary

Politics are not only behavior within civil government but all human groups’ behavior including corporate, academic, religious institutions.

Politics have three features: power, authority, violence. Political power is not limited to politician. Insurgency, corporation, even terrorist group have political power too. Political power influences people. Authority include legitimacy. Legitimate authority is classed as three type by Weber. First type is rational-legal, second is traditional authority, third is charismatic authority. Violence means government has power that force citizen to observe the law.

There are many types of government. Monarchy is simply thought as dynasty. It was a common form of government in the world during the ancient and medieval. In monarchy, head of country has great power. Democracy is run by citizens. Democracy has two major definition. First is that all members of the society have equal access to power. The other is that all members enjoy universally recognized freedoms and liberties. And there is totalitarianism, oligarchy, communist state and theocracy.

There is inequality in politics. First, gender. If women vote, in developed countries, women are underrepresented. Second, age. Young people less vote than older people do. Third, race. Racial and ethnic minorities are less vote than majorities. These phenomenon influenced by ongoing tendency to make voting harder for racial minorities. And there are also existed class, ideology.

Interest Thing

Originally I knew just few types of government: monarchy, democracy, communism. But after reading this writing, I know that there are many types of government such as totalitarianism, oligarchy, communist state, theocracy so on.

Question

This writing refers to all human groups do politics. Then exactly what behaviors are politics? Just talking with other people is politics? Questioning in class is politics?

I'd like to question to discussion about image in lecture sep.19(monday).
Discussion was "the image would be good representation of how developed a given part of the world is. would you agree? why or why not?"
Beyond the discussion "agree", our lecture was mainly discussed about only the economic aspect in part "developed"
However, I think the word "developed" doesn't only mean the economic aspect.
So, I agree the image represent economic "developed" aspect but, I think the image doesn't represent the aspect as " culture, mind(spirit like 'happy'), so on"
For example, Korea is objectively country progressed in economy. (Korea is 11 rank in OECD.)
So, Can you see that South Korea is developed country? I don't agree such thinking.
Korea have dishonorable title like 'suicide rate 1 rank', 'wage inequality 2 rank' (The United States is 1 rank), 'gender wage differences 1 rank'
Do you think these country is developed?
I hope it is taken notice not only economic aspect but the mental aspect in the mean "developed".

Extra posting (Gene VS Environment)

Gene and environment are not intended in any way with the antinomic nature, it is intended to act as a trigger to each other.
Some primitive reaction to animals and children certainly can be said to be defined primarily by genetic factors, evolutionary development is, the fact that to release the organisms from the shackle s of genetic factors.
Therefore, I think that here is recognized the possibility of education immediately.

Extra answer about gene VS enviorment.

I think gene is more important than enviorment. Though enviorment is good, situation that gene is not excellent can't perform anything. In ancient times, human being and many animal leave in same enviorment. But because human being have more  excellent gene than other animal, human being cought develop. Sure, effects of enviorment can't ignores. But I think that ability that using enviorment comes from gene.

post week.4 by Seung Jae Lee

+I'm sorry to be late.
Summary about this post.
First, I think that main point of this post that teacher has give is
'Economy'. Simple definition of economy is all active that generate and distribute and spend goods or services that needed for life of human. There are representatively two measure in economy. It is the capitalism and socialism.
Capitalism is economy system capital that have purpose that profit pursuit dominate.
This time, Western Europe, USA, Korea, and etc... have this economy system. Judging from the long history of mankind, This economy system not old relatively. It is start to sprout gradually from 16th century to 18th. Since the mid-18th century, It is develop gradually and established by The Industrial Revolution. and It is spread in Germany, USA, etc.
And I will summary socialism!
simple definition of socialism is abolish private property system and all members of society co-own property. Ideology of socialism that penetrate social degradation and moral injustice generated from private property system and be going to achieve more reasonable, justice co-society can be seen start to sprout since human have social and political speculation.
Opinion
My opinion about capitalism and socialism is neutral. capitalism nation  certainly has been developed rappidly. Because human in this system has been developed. But, In this system, Wealthy people is more richier, Poor people is more poverty. It is fatal problem of captitalism. When we saw this problem, people may look like better socialism than capitalism. but, socialism's problem exist naturally.
Desire to work significantly low. because although people work hard, given goods and money all same. so most countries of socialism's nation develop slowly. so I can't say that which one is better.

Question
Teacher! Reading my opinion, you may see my question, which one do you think is better?

W4 By jeon sung ho

This article is about the economy.
The economy was a concept since ancient times. The ancient economy was very simple, but the current economy has been adding a lot of concepts. For example, socialism, democracy, capitalism, and so on. The emergence of these concepts, it indicates that the current economy may be more related to sociology. Only a thousand years ago (the Middle Ages) economy is only means for survival.
But now the capitalist economy is the basis for determining the distribution of power.
