1) Summary

Today article deals with stratification. And I summarize it. Stratification mean that hierarchical arrangement of people in society. Stratification cause inequality in accordance with the socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status is divided into power, property, and prestige. And there are two dominant perspective to see stratification. Structural functionalism and conflict theories on stratification. Structural functionalism argue that stratification and inequality are evitable and benefit to society. Stratification contribute in some way to the larger system’s overall stability. But this theory has some criticism. This theory has difficulty in deciding important status and focus on high rank people. Conflict theory argue that Stratification benefits the rich and powerful people and bad to society. Class, race, gender and capitalism have effect on stratification.

 

2) Mention

I have critical mention to stratification. High class people take advantage of stratification maliciously. For example, recent incident in korea, Mrs. Jung has high class parents. So, She enter a good university using a illegal method. And even if she does not go to university, she has A grade. This incident that ignore students must be eliminated in society. And these case exist in society openly. So, I argue that stratification is a case that must be eliminated.

1) The best memorable content in Week9.

In this week, a posting subject is "stratification." stratification is a theme that I have seen on a book or television since I was young. Social stratification is a social stratification in society. There are values that are important to each society. For example, in communist countries they think authority is best Value, in capitalism countries they think economic power is best value. Thus, social scarcity values exist in each society, and distribution of these values is socially organized. Institutionalizedin equality is called social stratification.

There are many example of stratification. For example, there are slavery, Karst and identification system. An example of slavery is the ancient Roman Empire. Slavery is literally Master and slave. A slave is the property of his master. That is, a person was regarded as other person's property. Karst system was created as a result of the erroneous belief of Hinduism. In the reincarnation ideas of Hinduism, ‘Shudra’ is born as a The lowest layer who has had many Sin and karma in the past. So they pay for the sins of the past in this life. In other words, They must atone for past wrongs in this world. Finally, there is a status system. A status system is an idea duly accepted in a traditional society. The closest, we think the Joseon dynasty period. During the Joseon Dynasty, it is divided into three categories : yangban, commoner, and the lowest class of people. Each depends on their roles and circumstances that given according to their respective positions. A status system is determined from tier of their parents when one is not wanted. No matter how hard people tried, it was almost impossible to rise to another level. I introduced to the past stratification. Stratification of the past was greatly influenced by religion. In Hinduism, through the wrong religious doctrines, they Justify the stratification. In many other religion, they (high class people) doing this and justify other(lower people) goup. As the ages change and the 20th century, 20, slavery, Karst and identification system has disappeared because of the problem of human rights. But stratification still exists(Invisible to the eye.). Inequality exists in any society, and will not go away. However, unlike past that efforts never change life (almost), it is now possible to change one`s life by making efforts to change their lives. For example, a businessman who became a millionaire but in the past he was poor .

There are several theories on how to view this stratification. Among them, I would like to introduce 2 theories.

First, Functionalism theory.

The social stratification of functionalism is caused by the difference in role’s importance and role’s ability. That is, they believe that the judge should be rewarded for their efforts, as compared to street cleaners. A discriminatory distribution system is an incentive for a person to strive for greater reward. In other words, in a discriminatory distribution society people ability and society are improve and enhanced.
Second, conflict theory.

In terms of conflict, society is a field where struggle is waged to achieve scarce resources. Under these circumstances, vested interests are constantly trying to protect their property and honor. Thus, I think the social hierarchy is a phenomenon in which a vested interest exploiting and ruling other social hierarchy class people.

In other words, social stratification is a means of justifying the dominance that the vested interests used to defending the their property and wealth.

 

2) My question in this link.

I think stratification is in everywhere. But we cannot erase all of stratification. In people group like society, there must be stratification. So I think not people try to erase them, but people should try to shrink them. What do you think??

#Summary

Stratification is social ranked order through inequality of scarce resource, religion,.. and so on.
Max weber who one of the intersted in these inequalities defines stratification to three sections.
They are class, status, party.
Stratification is occured by use of socioeconomic status like wealth, occupational prestige reflecting power and so on.
In horticultural/pastoralist societies, humans settled down in one place and groups grew to be large. And distribution of labor made add of productions. Also, private property flourish in the late 15c in Europe and spreading out, three ideas be equality in 17c~18c by Hobbes and Locke.

In inequality, two approaches are consist. They are Structural-Functionalism, Conflict Theory.
According to first theory, strtification and inequalities are inevitable and beneficial to society. However, the other theory suggest that stratification is dysfunctional in society.

#Mention
It is very interesting to me that stratification change through period. Also, it is interesting too that in inequality, two classic approaches are consist.It is amazing in the way that people consider two theory are contrary.

Summary

Stratification is the hierarchical arrangement of people in a society. And it classifying people by three factors power, property, prestige.

Power is ability to make others to do his will.

Poverty is the sum of total of one’s asset, simply regular income, debts.

Prestige is the someone’s reputation or esteem related to his social society.

Inequality means the unequal chances to access to social resource. And it happens in every place of world. Inequality comes from hunter/gatherer society to modern age. In that time personal property show up and people starts to accumulate wealth. In horticultural/pastoralist societies people stars to trade each other more actively and this brought the inequality to our society.

Mention

I studied this before and i was always curious about inequality. as you see inequality is spread in our sociaty. for example same goal but different ways to achive that goal. someone goes easy way beacause of his wealth or power, but someone goes hard way beacause of he is poor and weak.

so after this lecture i could think more about inequality.

Question 

I wonder why we can't minimize the inequality and eliminate the roof of stratification. i know we can't eliminate them perfectly but at least we should  try. so what should we do?

1.Summary

Stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of people in a society.
Sociology has a long history. It's relatede with teaching about various kinds of inequality, including economic inequality, racial/ethnic inequality, gender inequality, and other types of inequality.
Inequality is the scarce and valued resources in society. the sort of resources:economic or political, such as health care, education, jobs, property and land ownership, housing, and ability to influence government policy.
Max Weber defines stratification in terms of socioeconomic status. And he saw Three dimention of
stratification(class,status,party). There are a variety of ways to measure status, including educational attainment, income, wealth, and occupational prestige. These measures reflect three characteristics of individuals: power, property, and prestige.
Power: refers to someone’s ability to get others to do his/her will. There are legitimate and illegitimate.
Property:refers to the sum total of one’s possessions as well as their regular income.
Prestige:refers to the reputation or esteem associated with one’s position in society.
The origins of inequality can be found in the transition from hunter/gatherer societies to horticultural/pastoralist societies. It's seems almost all society.
In hunter/gather societies,People grew and collected their food for all of their needs.
There was very little trading between the groups. But There were not many inequalities between groups.
In horticultural/pastoralist societies. groups grew to be very large and humans settled down in one place. So there were inequality some ability.
Industrialization began. In the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries.There was collectivity in the space and land in Europe.They have a private property. it result in a big inequality.
Since then inequality has gone increasingly larger.
Many of sociologists mentioned about inequality.
Social reproduction theory by Joel Charon focuses on the roles of institutions and cultures in the perpetuation of inequality and the process by which the social class structure is maintained. and
Karl Marx argued that the rich and powerful have control over the means of production, which is economic power, and they also have great influence on government power.
And there are Two classical approches about stratification: Structural-Functionalism ,Conflict Theorists
Structural-Functionalism asks the same question that it does of the other components of society
For example:"What function or purpose does it serve?"
Conflict theorists argue that stratification is dysfunctional and harmful in society.
Stratification benefits the rich and powerful at the expense of the poor.

2.Opinion

Although i am a vicitim in stratification, I don't know well about social stratification.

So I can learn many things this document.

And I've very surprised that There are some inequality in hunter/gather societies.

That The society of stratification effects on economy is also surprised thing.

I feel the inequality will be never disappeared.

3.Question

In the context, there are a variety of ways to measure status,and its reflect 3 characteristics of individuals: power,property,and prestige.

Why just 3 characteristics? Other reflecting about measuring social status are not reflected?

In this weekend, I read an article about stratification.

In fact..Compared until now, this subject feels difficult for me..

But I'll do my best to this posting..!

 

Stratification stand for the hierarchical arrangement in a society.

Especially, focus on economic stratification.

 

Socioeconomic Status

This part introduce a three main dimensions of stratification of Max weber idea.

It is those three..Power, Property and Prestige.

These three dimensions indicate people social class and socioeconomic status.

 

I interest that someone class and status can be layered into three.

These three dimensions is persuasive, and clear.

 

Social Class in America

This part introduce a Social Class in America, especially a theory of Sociologists Dennis Gilbert and Joseph Kahl.

America's working class and working poor are hotel housekeepers, waitresses, house maids.. and so on.

 

I was verrrrrry surprised by the fact ( the richest one percent of Americans earn a quarter of the country's income and control 40 percent of its wealth. )

And I learned the cause. because the Great Recession from 2007-2009

Dominant Perspectives

In this part introduce a Two classic approaches to stratification.

This approaches divided into structural-functionalism and conflict theories.

1)Structural-Functionalism on Stratification

It is logical that society must offer greater rewards to motivate the most qualified people to fill the most important positions.

2)Conflict Theorists on Stratification

Conflict theorists believe that this competitive system, together with the way the game is ‘fixed’, ends up creating and perpetuating stratification systems.

1. summary

 

The topic of the discussion is about stratification.

Stratification refers to the hierarchical alignment of people in society.

Inequality means the unequal access of people in society for limited resources and valuable resources.

The resources for these inequalities can affect individuals ’ economic or political situations, such as healthcare, education, jobs, and wealth.

The inequality is happening everywhere in the world.

Max Weber saw that individuals ' three characteristics _ power, property, and prestige _ were important elements of individuals representing hierarchy.

These three characteristics can represent a social class or social status of a person.

First, power is the ability to give others what they want, regardless of what others want.

Second, property refers to property owned by individuals and their general income.

The last is prestige.

Prestige means being socially acquired.

In other words, the individual represents respect for his position in society.

Such prestige is commonly associated with individual jobs.

 

 

The origins of inequality in society can be found in the transition from hunter/gatherer societies to horticultural/pastoralist societies.

In hunter/gather societies, (around 50,000 B.C.), most people worked together and jointly shared common ownership.

These societies did not inequality because individuals did not own private property.

In horticultural/pastoralist societies (around 12,000 B.C.), society grew and human settled in one place.

People have formed a wealth of people who accumulate wealth in addition to the time they spend other jobs besides food production.

Thus, there was a disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

 

 

The classic approach to these phenomenon, structural-functionalism and conflict theories.

From a point of structural-functionalism, stratification and inequality are helpful in society. 

The functional importance of a job means whether or not someone else can perform the same functions.

Thus, social inequality is necessary to maintain society.

Conflict theory argue that stratification is harmful in society.

Conflict theorist argue that social inequality supports wealthy people.

In contrast, the weak and poor people that they are socially exploited.

As a result of structural inequalities in society that sees solidify.

 

2.  my opinion 

 

I learned a lot about social stratification.

I have never thought deeply about social stratification but it has become a great opportunity.

I stand on the position of structural-functionalism of social stratification.

I think that there is more time and money in the training process for socially competent work.

Therefore, I think it is natural for such a person to receive compensation.

That means that people who do important work should support compensation.

I also believe that these distributions will contribute to the development of individuals ’ abilities.

Individuals are motivated by a graded distribution.

Therefore, I think it will contribute to the development of personal abilities and the development of social development.
